Combating nurse obesity together

For the second year, Maximus UK is sponsoring an initiative to help nurses reach and maintain a healthy weight. The Nursing You project has been designed by nurses for nurses. Working in partnership with C3 Collaborating for Health, Maximus UK brings one-to-one health coaching to this year’s initiative to complement their digital wellbeing app.

C3’s research finds that 1 in 4 nurses are obese, with 95 per cent of nurses having made previous attempts to lose weight. But factors behind these statistics are complex and unhealthy behaviours often relate to nurses’ experiences at work.

Committed to helping nurses achieve their wellbeing goals, Maximus UK has designed a unique 12-week behavioural change programme to better support nurses on their weight-loss journey. Health coaching will help nurses manage expectations and ensure they have the right mindset to make meaningful change. One-to-one coaching will support each nurse to set smart, realistic goals, tracking their progress over a period of weeks. As relapse is likely during the mid-stages of any behaviour change programme, the Maximus UK health coaches will be on hand to offer support and motivation to nurses when they need it most.

Christine Hancock, Director and Founder, C3 Collaborating for Health, said:

“We’ve been working with nurses to support their weight loss journeys for more than three years. In that time, we’ve learned a great deal about the unique struggles and difficulties they face in maintaining a healthy weight. For a lot of nurses, the hours they work and the particular stresses of the job mean that making little changes to support losing weight can be really difficult. I am delighted that Maximus are sponsoring Nursing You for a second year and I’m confident that their one-to-one health coaching programme will provide the much-needed intervention to get nurses with high-risk BMI on the right path in their weight loss journey.”

Dr Paul Williams, Division President, Maximus UK, said:

“We’re proud to be sponsoring Nursing You for a second year. Last year, we saw an overall improvement in nurses’ wellbeing and were encouraged by the interaction they had with our digital wellbeing app. This year, we’ve built on that success by developing a unique coaching model underpinned by a range of behaviour change principles. Our tailored programme offers nurses who have significant health risks associated with their weight the opportunity to turn the corner and commence a life-changing programme that could vastly improve their health.”
